About Solar Power Cars; You've Seen Them
|
You have seen them. Solar cars are those strange looking vehicles that supposedly run on the sun. Yes you have seen them. You just have not seen very many of them. This type of car has solar panels on its surface. Solar energy is created through the panels. The energy is then used to operate the vehicle. The idea is to have as many solar panels as possible to allow for the conversion of more energy. It appears to be a great idea. We already have the technology to produce vehicles. And we have the technology to convert sunlight into electricity. Seems like a natural marriage. Yet, solar power cars are still not main stream in most countries. There are many reasons for this. Solar cars remain impractical for daily travel, particularly if long commutes are required. Solar cars are usually very light weight. This helps the overall aerodynamics. However, the resulting improved efficiency is also the major drawback for daily use. When you add required safety features or simply try to make the car comfortable for passengers, the aerodynamic design is compromised. The vehicle becomes heavier. As a result, it requires more power. Even more power is needed for high speeds, such as highway speeds. Technology used in automotive, alternative energy and aerospace industries is used to create solar cars. The most important component of a solar car is its electrical system. The electrical system controls the power that operates the car. In essence, the battery pack serves as the car's fuel. Solar cars usually run on three wheels rather than four. Two wheels are in front, one in back. Most solar power cars are designed so the sunlight powers the vehicle. Sunlight is converted into electricity. Solar energy also charges a battery so the vehicle can run while in the shade. The issue is to balance the use of energy between the motor and battery. For these reasons, solar cars are not likely to become a commercial sensation any time soon. That said, new innovative possibilities are presented at "rayces" which are solar car races. Government agencies usually sponsor these events to encourage ongoing development of alternative energy. One of the most popular races is the biannual World Solar Challenge. The Challenge is a solar power car race held in Australia. University and corporate teams compete in the race. The purpose behind the Challenge is to promote ongoing research and development of solar cars. The intent is one day to create a solar car that is practical for everyone to use. Solar power cars are completely pollution free. There is no exhaust system, so there are no emissions. Solar cars are completely friendly to the environment. The experts are moving in the right direction. The benefits are incredible. With ongoing research and development, solar car manufacturers can only improve on the design and operation of cars. |
